Who is expected to be covered first

The scheme is initially intended for children born in 2020 and 2021, from age six until their 18th birthday, provided their primary residence is in Germany. Each subsequent year, the cohort turning six is expected to be added; older children are not covered under the current plan.

Planned amount and timetable

The state is expected to pay €10 a month for each eligible child. The rules are planned to enter into force on 1 January 2027, with support for the 2020 cohort granted retroactively from 1 January 2026. The first payments are scheduled for 2027.

What parents should know now

Under the current plan, no separate application will be required for the state contribution. Parents could open a certified standard investment account and make voluntary top-ups; without an individual account, the funds would be invested collectively by the Deutsche Bundesbank. Details may change before the legislative process is complete, so parents should wait for the final law and official implementation guidance.
