Registering household help as a minijob: insurance cover and tax relief

This information is for private households in Germany employing someone for tasks such as cleaning, shopping or laundry. Registration with the Minijob-Zentrale protects both sides; it is not a new benefit or a new rule.

The household worker's rights

A registered household worker is insured for accidents at work and while commuting and is entitled, among other things, to paid leave and continued pay during illness. Their 13.6% employee pension contribution can build rights in the statutory pension system.

Costs and tax relief for the household

Private employers pay contributions of no more than 14.62%, which is lower than in the commercial sector. Twenty per cent of total expenses, up to €510 a year, can be claimed for tax purposes. The exact amount can be checked with the Minijob-Zentrale's official calculator.

How to register

Registration can be completed online with the Minijob-Zentrale using «Haushaltshilfe anmelden». The institution calculates and collects the contributions and reports the employment for statutory accident insurance.
