Kindergeld: child benefit application and documents

Requirements differ between a child under 18 living in Germany and a family where a parent or child lives abroad.
Documents and information to prepare
- Tax identification numbers (Steuer-ID) for applicant and child; usually the main evidence for children under 18
- Main form KG1 and an Anlage Kind for each child
- Foreign birth certificate if the child was born or lives outside Germany
- Anlage Ausland if a parent or child lives abroad
- Employer certificate KG54 in cross-border cases specified by Familienkasse
- For children over 18: current proof of school, university, vocational training, internship or job-seeking status
- Decisions or certificates for family benefits received in Romania where relevant
- Further documents requested by Familienkasse about custody, residence or the parents’ circumstances
